Not Yearning for the Dark
24 December 2022
wait, rust, fade, fly
each method is a path to find
breath, hope, time, dust
these are the elements of trust
take, hold, bleed, give
each resolution is a chance you lose
wish, die, sleep, live
the decisions made, the fates you choose
we waited to tell you that the sea
had reconstructed all your plans
and then drowned them in its love
and left us these dry lands
we kept the letters that you burned
we'd read the ones you sent
we knew what you believed
but not how this would end
in this betrayal by the light
the things you try to hide
are spotlit in the rain
and seal the way you go
we wanted to show you that your hands
could hold a key to sky
shaking towards the stars
not yearning for the dark
take, hold, bleed, give
each resolution is a chance you lose
wish, die, sleep, live
the decisions made, the fates you choose
wait, rust, fade, fly
each method is a path to find
breath, hope, time, dust
these are the elements of trust
[Opened Garageband to check what kinds of orchestral percussion it had, ended up with this. There's no chorus, the musical structure is simplistic, the singing sounds exactly like I haven't sung anything in a really long time and was surprised to get anywhere near the notes I had in mind, and the lyrics oscillate between over-earnest and cryptic, the latter only partly because it had singing literally from beginning to end at first but then I chopped out the worst half of it and rearranged the remaining sections. But I listened to it like this enough times that that's what it sounds like to me now, so apparently it's done.]
